[ America tenses up--wary, first, by the strangeness of the request. Even with all the bitterness, it's not like America hates France. It just means he has no qualms with insulting him even more than usual. And though he thinks, maybe, part of him could feel that again, or at least remember what it felt like, paranoia is an overwhelming thing. So he stays on guard. ]

What exactly do you expect out of this relationship? Have you told him anything about nationhood at all?

[ Oh, well this is great. America feels on the verge of a touchy subject concerning his individuality, and he's had more than enough of that argument. So he skirts around the subject, not even bothering to bring up past partners and past feelings and bluh bluh. ]

What does anyone expect outta a relationship? It's not like I'm trying to just pass the time with chatting and sex, if that's what you mean.

Breathe, Amerique. What I want out of this is a better understanding of the situation. I've only arrived recently and we haven't spoken much--it's only reasonable.

I know how difficult it can be; and I also know that you and he care quite a lot for one another. You're telling me you love him, I know that too.

You are still so young yet you've come so far, even by your year. If you knew the true measure of how unique you and Mattie are, I doubt you would have accomplished it all in the first place.

It isn't your intentions that I mean to call into question, Amerique. When I ask you what you expect from this relationship I do not ask why you are in it. I ask what you want from it beyond what you already have.

Enjoy it. Please be happy while you can, Alfred. Treading the wandering road of love can be so very hard. And that is just where humans are concerned! When a nation allows themselves to open in such a way, that road can and will become treacherous. If Tatsumi is as he says, and does not age, that does not change who and what you are.

And so... I worry for you, trying the impossible.

As America listens, really listens despite himself, he finds it harder to hold on to his bitterness, easier to ignore the parts of him that want to keep his guard up just in case. For the time being he's back to being that kid: the one who stared up in admiration at the older countries (even though he felt so small compared to them, fighting for freedom and his life while they grappled to add to their empires) and stood shaking in the rain praying for a turn of luck.

And he remembers that even with the awe and gratitude he held for the others, France was the only one who made him felt like he mattered. Not just that America mattered, not just spiting England mattered, but whatever humanity he had was worth protecting. Sometimes he wonders if France (Francis) was the only one to ever see him like that.

So he lets go of his reservations. ]

Look at us, Francis. We are the impossible! Out of the most remote probability of the creation of life and evolution of man, somehow we evolved outta sentience. Thought became tangible, mortality determined by the lives of a collective rather than the bloodflow of a single body. Defying an empire, finding flight, splitting the atom, and touching the moon were only the next steps for humanity, just like we were.

Love, too. Something as big and complicated as being alive. So I guess what I'm saying is... impossibility is only what we haven't tried enough or haven't discovered yet!

Oh, right, we were talking about me and Tatsumi. I don't really know where I want to go from here. Wherever the relationship takes me, I guess. I don't know what the next step is for us, this universe or ours and the people across all the universes. All I know is that I really do love him and I love my life with him. As long as I have that, I don't care what lies beyond this point.

...Plus, it's something new. Dating a vampire. Kinda exciting!

Amerique, believe me when I tell you that I am happy you have found someone who gives you such delight. As nations however, our duty--it is to ourselves. Our people. Non, I am not saying you have lost sight of that! Eh... Heartbreak is inevitable with us.
