I am quite bored here, with so little to do. Perhaps, should anyone in Spero desire friendly company, I could be of service? Nothing with the strings attached, as they say; perhaps a talk on the roof of a building in the starlight or a meeting over lunch or dinner.

Oh! Speaking of disgusting food, I have a story to tell you. It features a then small nation by the name of Angleterre. You would know him as Arthur Kirkland! Or that irritable Englishman with the caterpillars above his eyes.

Anyway, this little one was uncouth, unwashed and uncultured. Such a small angry thing! But he secretly desired that he could be as cultured as... me! It took months, but he grew out his mangy hair.

I came to visit him and in my graciousness, returned his hair to the way it suits him; the way it is today! He could have chosen something much better, I assure you my sense of style is not limited to that kind of mop. But it is the one he wanted, and he has kept it ever since!

The hair itself really isn't so bad, but there is such a thing as "too much", oui?

Modern style dictates a more chic and refined look! These things change with not just the decade but the year, as we've already discussed. Ah, to indulge in modern fashion again, even here! The same applies to architecture, but for that I am less passionate. Wonderful were the days when great engineers would design ornate edifices all across my landscape, and artisans would turn dreams into genius reality.

If only we could do such things for Spero and the other cities.

Yes, actual trolls. Eridan, Sollux, Tavros, Gamzee, Nepeta, Karkat. They're a very cool bunch. Eridan's awesome. He's a Prince and an awesome shooter. [He loves Eridan so freaking much it's ridiculous.]

A lot of that you can probably find around the city. The latter you can check the lumber yard, that's where I tried to get most of the supplies for Ace when he was repairing the Weather Hardy.

Oui. Grand-père Rome died. Rome was a vast empire that spanned much of the world, but when he could no longer sustain himself, he left the rest of his territories to follow in his footsteps.

The world fell into darkness. Things were forgotten for centuries; mankind regressed into, ah, what they had been over a thousand years before. There was war, attempts to reclaim what had been lost.

An entire population becomes illiterate and destitute, and plagues and disease sweep the continent. If that is not dark...

B-Belgium once said my Pops reminded her a lot of Rome. It's unsettling to think his territories are about to suffer that same fight... perhaps even more literally.

He was huge. And the strongest man I've ever know. The whole world acknowledged him as the strongest. Of course anyone who didn't tried to defeat him and failed, so then they usually had to, eh? He could have done anything I think. He had the power to destroy the world, but all he wanted was a family. He took in dumb kids like me and my brothers to make us into something. It's for him that I wear this tattoo, eh? My Pops' mark.

Pops was a really famous pirate emperor, the strongest, the only man to tie with the Pirate King. So he used that reputation to protect islands. Foodvalten, Fishman Island -- we took them over, under our protection, because he said if anyone wanted to try to enslave fishmen or mermaids, then they had to go through him first. And that put a stop to a lot of it, because even the most hardy of idiots would think twice before incurring our wrath, eh?

There was a war though. An ex-nakama betrayed us. He ah... [Glances away.] Blackbeard, Marshall D. Teach, he murdered Thatch for the power of a darkness devil fruit. And during the war he killed Pops and took his devil fruit too, so now he can cause earthquakes on top of the darkness. Teach wants to be the next pirate king, so it'll be a mess. Not to mention all the other pirates in the world who hate us and will try to take control.

Oui, that-- That does seem reminiscent of Rome. I think, however, applying one world's history may not work considering the differences.

It is difficult to say, knowing so little. But we survived because we did not lose hope, and that is what is important, non?

Aye. My family will fight on. It's what Pops and Thatch would want, and I'm not about to disappoint them.

Besides, Ace's little brother... he made sure to protect him, and all through the fight, Luffy was my first priority. I want to stick around long enough to see whether he makes it to Pirate King.
